From January 2018 through May 2019 I had the pleasure to work with several wonderful Atlanta area young people from elementary to high school in one-on-one tutoring. Private tutoring comes with a set of challenges distinct from other teaching environments, primarily that it’s harder to prepare for what students are working on when you don’t have access to their school and curriculum. However, this can also be a fascinating place to be. I love working with students that were taught a different way to approach a type of problem and having them explain how they understand it. To me, it reveals a lot about the many correct ways that math can be conceptualized. I hope that my excitement for math transfers to the kids that I talk to, and that more people grow up knowing the joys of math.
